Empowering Lives, Creating Opportunities.Learn More

The Problem

Millions of Ethiopians face significant barriers to securing jobs that provide financial stability, benefits, and opportunities for growth due to a lack of access to adequate education and skills training. At Birara Genet, we are committed to breaking these barriers by developing and expanding career pathway programs specifically designed for individuals with limited formal education.

Our programs are tailored to meet the unique needs of our participants and the demands of the local job market, ensuring they receive practical, hands-on training that leads to meaningful employment. By equipping our participants with valuable skills and connecting them to opportunities, we are creating pathways toward sustainable livelihoods and long-term success within their communities.

In their own words

At Birara Genet, our participants share powerful stories of transformation. Many are mothers and breadwinners who have overcome significant challenges to provide for their families. Through our training and employment programs, they've not only gained valuable skills but also a renewed sense of purpose and independence.

Our work empowers them to turn their potential into real opportunities, helping them secure meaningful jobs and contribute to their communities. Their resilience and success are the heart of our mission.

Our Participants

In today's job market, employability—defined as the combination of skills, knowledge, and personal attributes that enable individuals to secure and thrive in employment—has become increasingly important. As unemployment rates continue to rise, there is a growing recognition that technical training must be accompanied by ongoing learning opportunities to ensure that individuals can not only find jobs but also sustain meaningful employment over time.

However, these opportunities often fail to reach the most vulnerable members of society. At Birara Genet, our focus is on those who are frequently overlooked by traditional employment initiatives. Our participants come from backgrounds characterized by:

  • Limited or no formal education: Many lack access to conventional training programs, leaving them without the skills necessary to pursue employment through typical channels.
  • Minimal to no income: Many of our participants are struggling to meet basic needs such as housing and food security, and they face significant financial hardship without stable employment.
  • Family providers: A large portion of our participants are the primary breadwinners in their households, responsible for supporting dependents, yet they often lack the resources and opportunities to secure sustainable livelihoods.
